A TikTok influencer has sparked outrage for her insensitive and ignorant promotion of The Color Purple, a movie that deals with the harsh realities of racism, sexism and violence. In this blog post, we will analyze how she made this mistake and how you can avoid it when promoting a movie on TikTok.
#1. The controversial video
A TikTok influencer has faced a lot of criticism for her ‘ignorant’ and ‘tone-deaf’ way of promoting a new movie. The influencer, Mirta Miler, who is known as @mimiermakeup on the platform, posted a sponsored video a few days ago to advertise the upcoming Warner Bros. movie, The Color Purple. However, her video was far from appropriate.
In the video, which she has since deleted, she described the movie as a ‘heartwarming’ story and celebrated its release by wearing a purple wig, a purple sweater and eating a purple macaroon. She seemed to be oblivious to the actual theme and message of the movie, which is based on the 1982 novel by Alice Walker.
#2. The backlash from the audience
The Color Purple is a powerful and poignant movie that portrays the struggles and hardships of a young African American girl named Celie, who lives in rural Georgia in the early 20th century. The movie, which is set to hit the theaters on December 25, 2023, explores the issues of racism, sexism, violence and abuse that Celie and other black women face in their lives.
Miler’s video, which trivialized and misrepresented the movie, was met with a lot of anger and disappointment from the viewers, especially the black community. Many people called her out for her ‘ignorance’ and ‘insensitivity’ and accused her of disrespecting the movie and its significance.
“She didn’t do any research and disrespected what the movie was about,” one TikTok user commented on a video that exposed Miler’s blunder.
“I noticed a lot of ‘influencers’ are promoting the movie. Yet all of the videos are about the color rather than the story,” another user remarked.
The influencer was slammed for being ‘tone-deaf’ after promoting the upcoming movie, The Color Purple.

Miler has since realized her mistake and issued an apology video, in which she admitted that she did not do her homework and apologized for her ‘ignorance’. She said that she was not trying to justify or defend her actions, but to take responsibility and accountability for them.
“I am not making this video to justify my stupidity or unprofessionalism, I am making this video to take accountability… me as a content creator absolutely did not do my job, and my job is to educate myself about the content I post - especially sponsored content,” she said in the video.
“In my mind there is no explanation or justification for being ignorant. The only thing that I feel like it’s the right thing to do is to be absolutely embarrassed and take accountability for my ignorance and apologize directly to the black community for being tone deaf and insensitive.”
She also thanked the people who held her accountable and pointed out her error, saying that she was not the kind of person who would ignore or deny her faults. She added that she has not and will not be accepting any payment from Warner Bros for her content. She concluded by saying that she appreciated the people who listened to her apology and that she would take some time to reflect on the incident.
