Efron said that changing his body not only helped him look like a wrestler, but also helped him get into the mindset of his character. He said: “It was an unforeseen ally. Having all that weight on, you don’t feel normal. And the delayed-onset muscle soreness was through the roof.”
He added that he had to isolate himself from his social life during the preparation, which also helped him relate to his character’s loneliness and struggles. He said: “During preparation, it’s one thing to manage that — you don’t have to be super social. I found myself withdrawing quite a bit.”
#3. The Lessons He Learned from the Role
Efron also admitted that he had to overcome his perfectionist tendencies for the role, saying that he had to remind himself that ‘life is way too short’. He said: “We’re supposed to be having fun. I have to remind myself that this should be fun above all else. If being a perfectionist is going to be the thorn in my side from this point on, it’s like, life is way too short.”
He also paid tribute to his late co-star Matthew Perry, who played his father in 17 Again. He said that Perry taught him the importance of friendship and storytelling. He said: “It’s very important to reach out to friends and foster relationships where you can talk and share stories. I hold the time we shared together really dear, I’ve been thinking about him a lot, every day.”
